This renovation took place in the old city of Chania in its quaint street of Portou, Crete. This project was to replace an old, damaged roof belonging to an abandoned two floor building, the demolition of the second floor and it’s reconstruction and generally all the necessary repairs in order to have a brand new house that combines safety, beauty, viability according to the law and the architectural demands of the archeology.
The old roof was replaced by a new one made of wood that is used for these specific functions. The new roof also supports Greek and Roman tiles, bituminized paper between the tiles and the wood, and a beam of reinforced concrete around the masonry for the static reinforcement of the roof.
All the derided plaster inside the house was changed in order to offer a stronger insulation to avoid dampness. The new floor was made with metallic beams that where placed in certain points, so that they can support the new floor according to the static analysis. A new wooden stairway in the ground floor was made for easy access to the upper floor. All the frames of the windows and doorways were replaced by new ones. On the ground floor a new bathroom with all the necessary facilities and all the electrical supplies and plumbing were replaced and reconstructed.
For architectural purposes, gypsum board was used for the design of the interior of the house and for covering the beams on the ceiling on the ground floor. The lining is different in every floor, on the ground floor there are ceramic tiles that fits with the style of the house and the first floor was replaced by a wooden floor. Finally exterior paintings were coloured white in order to blend with the surrounding buildings.
