Crete is well worth exploring by car, so before you set off here are a few tips for trouble free driving;
Always have your driving licence and car hire contract with you, you contract should never be a photocopied piece of paper!
Fasten your seat belts even if others do not - “it is compulsory”.
Some petrol stations are closed on Sundays and public holidays, and if you are heading into the mountains, make sure to fill up your tank before you go, as stations can be far and few between.
Plan your journey by time, not by kilometers as you may need to drive slower than normal. Take a map, roads have a nasty habit of turning into a dirt track. Go slowly and always watch out for the potholes in what may at first appear to be a good road!
At roundabouts, you must give way to traffic coming on to the roundabout. If unsure, proceed cautiously and don't just assume you have the right of way.
Parking areas all have the pay and display which is relevantly cheap in comparison to the rest of Europe.
As in the UK, drinking and driving laws do apply in Greece, so don't attempt it.
