General Info

The municipality of Kolymbari and the capital of which includes a vast amount of picturesque villages (communities) being Afrata, Vasilopoulou, Vouvon, Glossas, Delianon, Drakonas, along with Episkopis, Zymvragou, Kamisianon, Kalidonias, Melisourgio, and finally not forgetting Nochion, Ravdouchas, Panethimou and Spilla.

Kolymbari is a beautiful fishing village located 23km and being just a 20 minute drive on the National Highway from the west of Chania; 25 minutes drive from the port of Souda Harbour where regular connections to the mainland, Athens can be made and 35km from Chania’s international airport situated on the Akrotiriou Hill.

Kolymbari is notoriously known for its fresh fish tavernas that dot the waters edge, offering wonderful sunsets and views right through to Chania itself.  Fast becoming the little Hollywood of Chania due to a number of special guests that visit us during the summer months, its tranquil harbour, and nearby ancient sites it is no wonder a favourite with the locals.

At Kolymbari you can also find the famous Greek Orthodox Monastery of Panaghia Odigitria (Monastery Gonia), with its magnificent rust-colour domes. The original monastery, which is used today as a cemetery dates back to the 13th century. The monastery has always been a spot of resistance and for this reason it has been destroyed by various conquerors of Crete several times. A great celebration on the 15th of August is held here and all are welcome to the local feast in honour of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Those looking for a more natural monument should see the ancient olive tree, near the cave of Aghios Ioannis Erimitis.  The village of Marathokefala is situated in the south and to the north you will find the exclusive bay of Afrata which is well worth a visit known for its wild landscape and crystal clear waters.

The village is easy accessible by the regular public bus service, 24 hour taxi or even ones very own transport.   Car Hire and Motorbike hire is also available all year round.

Kissamos/Kasteli is also easy accessible from Kolymbari offering its beautiful landscapes. The port of Kissamos links Crete to the nearest islands of Kithara, Kalamata and Gythion or even Piraeus. A main attraction during the summer months are the daily cruises to Gramvoussa and the Balos Lagoons with its pristine golden sands, pure nature, and of course not forgetting its perfectly standing Venetian Castle perched 137 metres high on the rock west cliff side and from this point the geological aspects of this area will unfold.
