Rethymnon is a town full of history and is the third largest town on the island with a population of around 20,000.
Stealing all of the attention when you arrive in the bustling modern town, is the old Venetian Fortress on the sea front and the Venetian city lies behind. As you meander through the maze of narrow alleyways you can almost imagine what life must have been like four or five hundred years ago.
The town is situated on an expanse of land that was once the site of the Minoan settlement of Rethimna. It is dominated by the huge fortress, the largest ever built by the Venetians, which was constructed between 1573-1580.
Rethymnon has a vast stretch of sandy beaches which connect the old and new town. Continuing along the old coastal road, tiny villages have mushroomed and spread along the land directly opposite the beach with names such as Platanias, Adele, Stavromenos and Sfakakia from which a series of small underpasses provide convenient safe short cuts to the beaches.
Whatever you fancy Rethymnon has something to delight all....
