Theriso is a town and municipality in the west of the island of Crete. It is part of the Kydonia province which covers the central part of Chania prefecture. The head town of the municipality is Vamvakopoulo and its distance from the town of Chania is only 3 km away.
The town of Theriso is located to the south of Chania at the top of the Theriso gorge. The 14 km drive up the gorge is considered spectacular and the village of Theriso is famous for the cooler temperatures and grill restaurants. Theriso is a historic village and the birthplace of the mother of Eleftherios Venizelos, one of the greatest politicians in the history of Greece. In the village of Therisos in 1905 took place the Theriso revolt led by Eleftherios Venizelos and as a result was the union of Crete with the rest of Greece.
The municipality of Theriso extends from outer suburbs of Chania and includes places and villages like Perivolia, Agia and Varipetro.
