General Info

This is the headland that rises to the north western side of Chania and consists of the communities of Kounoupidiana, Aroni, Mouzouras, Sternes and Chordaki.

In ancient times, the settlement of Minoa was located on its western side.  In 1824 the Arabs landed there.  The area played an important part in Crete’s fight for freedom and at the Profitis Ilias there are the tombs of the great Martyr of Greece Eleftherios Venizelos and Sofokles of the Venizelos family.

Kounoupidiana is home to the Technical University of Crete, Kampani offers its National Shooting range and in Mouzouras the Airport of Chania “Ioannis Daskalogiannis” can be found.

Its bustling kounouipidiana (meaning cauliflower) centre (Kifisia of Athens) has exquisite shopping for all, a great range of traditional tavernas, only serving its finest quality of delicacies and wines.  An amazing bowling centre along with the newly built (2008) Palace Cinema.

The municipality of Akrotiri offers many popular beaches, such as Kalathas, Tersanas and the alluring sandy beach of Stavros which is quiet unique due to its making of the hit film Zorba the Greek (very popular with locals), another being Machairida, Marathi, Loutraki and Agios Onoufrios.
