The town

Chania or 'Little Venice' as it is also known, lies on the north west coast of the island and up until 1971 was the capital of Crete..  The town itself has had many occupants including the Minoans, Arab, Venetians and Turks that occupied the city, and many of the buildings from that period can still be seen today.

The Venetian Harbour with its lighthouse and massive fortification is undoubtedly the city's focal point and is one of Europe's most beautiful and picturesque harbours.  Full of restaurants, tavernas and bars with such a wide variety of cuisine, you will find that deciding where or what to eat will be one of your most difficult decisions.

The shopping in Chania is simply fantastic.  The back streets are lined with small boutiques and shops, but the most popular shopping areas that everyone heads for are the world famous Leather Lane and the indoor market, built on the same lines as the Marseilles in Paris in 1918, although prior to that used as the main entrance gates to the Kydonia Port built firstly by the Venetians.

The culture in Chania is phenomenal, and in fact once you have visited this beautiful town, you may find it extremely hard to leave – and if you manage to leave, you are sure to visit again......
